SEO Thoughts on Personalized Search
A lot of words have been written in the past month on personalized search and the marketing impact it will make in the future. Due to the impact Google has on the Internet market, every change the guys at Google make, such as the implementation of personalized search, wakes up SEO professionals and gets them on their feet.
Personalized search results will have some effect on our day-to-day search experience, if we choose to log in and use Google’s personalized feature, or log out using anonymous cookies for history. This change could, in some cases, assist the user in retrieving more relevant results, but it can make SEO professionals work a bit harder. Personalized search results mean that for the same search query, different people will retrieve different results. Search results that would appear higher before on Google might appear lower when personalized results are used. The downside of this is not only for marketers, but for users also, as we have explained.
Although much has been said on the Web on the impact of personalized search, we can’t be sure that it will have a dramatic change on SEO and Web marketing. In Bill Bouchard’s opinion, as expressed on Mannix’s blog, the impact will be substantial. Bill thinks the change will benefit the user but will make Internet marketing more complex.
On the other hand, Today SEOmoz’s Rand Fishkin gives a different perspective on the subject. Rand doesn’t think we should count this change as one of Google’s dramatic changes, and most of SEO work shouldn’t change. The difference in SEO work should be in finding more creative ways to bring visitors (“any way we can”) and keeping sites with better design, user interface, and Web pages more accessible.
This change will probably have some effect on searching. We should try searching with and without personalized search, depending on our search needs, especially since we are often searching for topics that are new to us, which makes our search history less relevant.
