Searching Goes Social
Social media websites are already a substantial part of our lives. It is rare to find someone who isn’t using one of the popular social media sites such as Facebook, MySpace or Twitter. Social media sites have brought a dramatic change. We are not only searching the web for information, we are searching for people, joining groups, listening to music and keeping our connections updated with our latest activities..
When searching for specific people on social media such as Facebook or MySpace you may have trouble finding the actual person because the names are too similar or they are misspelled.
Let’s compare how a few of the most popular social media sites handle a basic “people” search. For this purpose, I’ll search for Amir Lavi, who in addition to being SortFix’s CEO and co-founder, is a musician. We’ll search for his musical works on Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn.
Facebook – For Amir Lavi, Facebook devlivers 21 results, all with the same name. Most have a photo and in some cases additional info such as school or country and work networks. If you don’t know the person through some other social connection or network, it won’t be that easy to find the specific person.
