Searching Goes Social

Searching Goes Social

Social media websites are already a substantial part of our lives. It is rare to find someone who isn’t using one of the popular social media sites such as Facebook, MySpace or Twitter. Social media sites have brought a dramatic change. We are not only searching the web for information, we are searching for people, joining groups, listening to music and keeping our connections updated with our latest activities..

When searching for specific people on social media such as Facebook or MySpace you may have trouble finding the actual person because the names are too similar or they are misspelled.

Let’s compare how a few of the most popular social media sites handle a basic “people” search. For this purpose, I’ll search for Amir Lavi, who in addition to being SortFix’s CEO and co-founder, is a musician. We’ll search for his musical works on Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn.

Facebook – For Amir Lavi, Facebook devlivers 21 results, all with the same name. Most have a photo and in some cases additional info such as school or country and work networks. If you don’t know the person through some other social connection or network, it won’t be that easy to find the specific person.

Search for Amir Lavi on Facebook

Myspace (a social network focused on music)-  The search retrieves only 3 results. Although the results are relevant, we still cannot be sure the person is the Amir Lavi we’re looking for. The MySpace results only show name, country and gender, characteristics which may not always be the most helpful way to narrow the search.

LinkedIn – (a social network focused on business and professional groups) -  The search shows 7 results for Amir Lavi. Every result specifies the name, country, job title, and company name. LinkedIn may be the right place for exploring career options, but it’s the wrong place for this  search.

Now, let’s see how we can improve our social media search with SortFix.

Sortfix – Using SortFix to find people, you retrieve site indexed results of people. SortFix Power Words™ guide you to the subject and topic within the subject. In this case, we type in Amir Lavi and add “music” from the Power Words.

Search for Amir Lavi

Now we will click the search button again -

Try to imagine how difficult your search would have been without SortFix searching for a certain John Smith…

The “music” hint that Sortfix gives seems quite useful in this case. I’m lucky to have an uncommon name…
